Sat 24 July Early Music Studio Recorder Festival. Concerts and dinner. VRG is providing refreshments between concerts.

Venue: Wyselaskie Auditorium, Uniting Church Centre for Theology & Ministry, 1 Morrison Close, Parkville Melway 2B D4

3 - 4 pm Lyre Winds concert: talented young performers

5 -6 pm Telemann extravaganza with Hans Dieter Michatz, Ruth Wilkinson, recorders, and Ann Morgan, harpsichord

8 - 9 pm Mixing the old with the new: Hans Dieter Michatz, Ruth Wilkinson, Kamala Bain (New Zealand).

$25 / $15 concession for each concert; $60 / $45 for three concerts; VRG member price $40 for three concerts.

The Big Play: joint weekend with VOSA & CMV
Venue: Kew Primary School, Peel Street Kew, Melway 45 C5
P resented jointly by Community Music Victoria, the Victorian Orff Schulwerk Association and the Victorian Recorder Guild. It is a registered event in the 'Making Music, Being Well' program, part of 'Music Play for Life'.
Making music together in the community - sessions suitable for all ages and stages. Teachers and music leaders develop and share your skills in hands-on workshops. A fantastic weekend using Marimbas, Fiddles, Recorders, Drums, Percussion and more!

Workshop: Music of the French Court. Led by Katina Czyczelis.
Venue: Spensley Street Primary School, 193 Spensley St, Clifton Hill.
This workshop included insights and playing opportunities, exploring the music of the French baroque, including approaches to articulation and ornamentation.

Blow-in led by Diane Draper. "And all that jazz!" Three pieces, one with no bass. These include solo lines for ambitious players.

Practice in the Rosina Auditorium 10 - 12, performance in the grounds (near Lentil as Anything) from 2 - 3.30 or so. 
Our traditional gathering to play seasonal music, led by Barbara Praetz.

Gabrieli multi-choir blow-in with Roger Palmer.
 
Venue: St Philip's, Stephenson's Rd, Mt Waverley (enter from Catherine Ave), Melway 70 D6. 
This blow-in was led by Roger Palmer, and we played Roger's arrangements of some of Giovanni Gabrieli's Canzoni and a Gabrieli sonata - all works for two or more choirs of instruments and very suitable for recorders.
One academic wrote: "The fundamental aim of the canzon ... was to entertain through diversity and animation."   If that isn’t enough to intrigue you then consider: "The early 16th century is marked by an almost frantic search for materials playable on instruments ..." (Egon Kenton, Life and Works of Giovanni Gabrieli, American Institute of Musicology, 1967).
2-4 Oct Spring residential weekend at Myrniong, theme "Listening for the Harmony " . Tutors included Robyn Mellor, from Canberra, Hans-Dieter Michatz, from Sydney, Louisa Hunter-Bradley, Greg Hurworth and Jill Ferris; Diane Draper led the first Big Blow and Roger Palmer led a premiere of his recent composition "Endymata".

"An inspiring collection of four and five part music from the 16th and 17th century, rich in melody and challenging in  rhythm, with a touch of modernism at the end, in the vein of Andrew Charlton or Maurice Whitney."

Afternoon practice and performance led by Greg Hurworth 
Venue: Olivet Nursing Home, 7 Rupert St, Ringwood; Melway 49 K6.
Greg Hurworth lead us in playing some delightful Central European traditional music, which he introduced us to in his workshop in March.
We met at 1.30 pm, for a rehearsal; and performed for the Olivet residents at 3.30.

A lively blow-in led by Roger Palmer (working with an advanced group on two madrigals) and Jill Ferris (working with other players to play through several songs and dances).

Folk music from central and eastern Europe - workshop led by Greg Hurworth (just back from the Czech Republic).
 
St Catherine's Anglican Church, 404 Kooyong Road, Caulfield South.   
This workshop explored some of the differences between the folk traditions of Poland, Hungary, Rumania, Moravia and Czechoslovakia (pitch, rhythm...). $30 for the day ($25 concession).

Early Music Spring Festival. van Eyck event supported by VRG.
As part of the 2008 Early Music Spring Festival, Ruth Wilkinson's students provided open air performances of some van Eyck works - including some which Ruth introduced to us in her August workshop on van Eyck.
Venue: Early Music Studio, 27 Royal Parade, University of Melbourne, Parkville.
Time: 2 - 4.30 pm.
Afternoon tea provided.

Spring weekend at Myrniong. Residential weekend on the theme "Sharing the Tune". Sessions included "Pipes and dance" renaissance dance led by Heather Oldfield and Jill Ferris; mediaeval music, led by Zana Clarke; a four choir work led by Liz Zetzmann; a polyphonic big blow led by Ursula Genaehr; and small group ensembles led by composer Lance Eccles, among others.
